Things

Comedy is not all about jokes.  I have been a witness to this a few times in my meager comedy career.  I have seen some comics just be dicks off stage.  Rude to the waitstaff, demanding of things, uninterested in what is going on around them, argumentative…  Just nonsense really.  And this will come back to haunt them.  They won’t be asked to come back to the club.  They will lose money and opportunities as a result.  Just how it goes.  Now, they may be the talent, they may be the reason people are in the seats, they may be funny but they are completely replaceable.  There are only 52 weekends in the year.  Some of those weekends might be lost to holidays or other things so let’s just say there are 50 weekends in the year.  Why risk losing a weekend by being a dick?  By being rude?  By being just a surly cuss?  Trust me, there are guys just waiting to take your spot.  Funny will take you so far.  You are still a human being so treat others with respect too!

I’ve been kind of disturbed with a lot of racial humor I have heard lately.  A lot has happened at open mics but some has come from headliners.  The problem is that the crowd usually eats this crap up.  So it kind of perpetuates the cycle.  Comic tells an off color joke, audience rewards them with laughter, the comic continues to write this way.  So I came up with my own racist joke.  I thought it was clever and really more of a social commentary kind of joke.  And not shockingly it has gone well.  It is frustrating to me that I want to write better and have the audience appreciate deeper thoughts.  Sadly it gets lost.  Sometimes it still is about the basic level.  Keep It Simple Stupid…

I have been doing less promotion of my shows lately.  Mostly because of the harm that can come from it.  And doesn’t that sound backwards?  Harm coming from promoting yourself?!  You see, there are these people called “bookers” who are the ones responsible for getting comics to work rooms.  These bookers are often territorial and they can get pissy if they think you are working a room that interferes with a room they have.  Often these gigs are one nighter rooms on a Wed at some bar in a hick town.  These rooms are not hurting other rooms.  I find it funny how these bookers like to intimidate comics.  Usually younger and less experienced guys.  My thought is that if you don’t want me to work for someone else, then work me in your rooms!  Pure and simple.  There is no loyalty in this gig.  Comics are independent contractors.  We are all just trying to make our way.  I just wanna work and feel like I am having to crawl over people who should be helping me in that pursuit.  I assume it is similar in theater and the music industry.  I wish bookers worried more about how they can make their rooms better, pay comics more, and just have better shows than worrying about where comics are performing.  Meh.

I am doing a benefit show for the National Guard tomorrow in Ft. Wayne, IN.  I will be car pooling it down there with a few other comics.  I usually find the journey much more fun than the destination.  I hope so as the ride is like 4 hours there or so.  What we do for the people who help protect our country… :D

Thanks for reading folks.  Have a good one.

Stuff, things, nick knacks...

I had the opportunity to work with 2 african american comics (I’m just gonna say black ok?!) recently and we talked about different shows.  They talked about they don’t like performing in front of all black crowds because there is this notion that black comics are going to be Def Jam guys.  Neither of these guys were.  As a result the crowds are tougher on them because they don’t fit the stereotype.  I get that but I find it odd.  It would be the same as assuming all white comics are the same and they most assuredly are not.  They went on to say that they felt I would do ok in front of a black crowd like that because I have a “I don’t care attitude” a good portion of the time.  I just want to do well because I am funny.

I worked with Greg Fitzsimmons this weekend.  It was something I was looking forward too as he is a big name in the comedy world, is on Howard Stern a lot, and just has a certain attitude that I can respect in comedy.  So me, in classic Stu form, go on to introduce him as Greg Fitzpatrick.  Sigh…  Now I knew immediately what I said was wrong as corrected myself.  I just felt like an ass.  Not like this was the first time that has happened to me (forgetting a name or saying the wrong one).  It is weird how you can blank out things just like that.  Greg interviewed me for his podcast.  Hopefully he decides to put it out.  He called me Luke and Lou on it a few times…  That son of bitch…  He was a good dude.  He was telling me about a book he was working on that is coming out this fall.  It sounds very interesting.  It will be funny (of course) but might also offer some insight into Greg.

Scott Long was the feature and it was good to see him.  He headlines most other rooms but is trying to work his way into Grins to headline.  We talked about the sacrifices you make in the biz to get ahead.  He gave good insight into things having been in the biz for 18 years or so.  He gave me a good suggestion for a t-shirt I am thinking of making.  I need to start selling something if I am gonna hit the road.  Sad part of the biz.

I was in Lexington, Ky this past Tues doing a comedy contest at Comedy Off Broadway.  It was a stellar club that has a great lineup.  Now, I hate contests but I saw this as an opportunity to showcase me talent for them to see about actually coming and working the club in the future.  The contest had an audience winner and one picked by judges.  After you were done the judges talked/critiqued you like American Idol.  The 1st thing they sad to me was that they could tell I was a working comic and that I wouldn’t win the contest.  Kind of a weird thing to hear.  A backhanded compliment.  If nothing else I did well, got a good clip from it and networked with some people down there.  They judges did say that they liked my stuff after the show.  We shall see if I ever make it back there.  I’m going to Louisville this Thurs.  Seems the state of KY loves them some Stu.

Keep fighting the good fight and have some laughs people…

What is all the hubbub about?!

World Cup soccer (futbol)…  I don’t get it.  I’m in the minority on that but I am cool with it.  I still use VHS, cordless phones and wear zubaz.  Never claimed to be with it.

Busy weekend with the State Theater show coming up.  I have mixed feelings about it though.  I have seen some great comedy shows there- Robery Schimmel, Jim Breuer, Brian Regan (twice), a Bob and Tom tour, and Bob Saget (although that wasn’t really great) and it is a great place to see comedy.  It will be nice to get on that stage and see the back stage and enjoy it.  My fear is that there won’t be a lot of people there.  Lets face it, no one on this bill is a name of any kind.  Getting friends and family will only help so much.  The trick is to get people who have no idea who you are to come out!  That is how to fill theaters.  And lets face it, even if we have a 100 people there it will still feel small in a place that seats like 1000.  I guess worrying about shit like this is what makes me a comedian.  Always worried about the negative sides of things.  If you know of anyone in the Kalamazoo, MI area send em over please.  8pm start time on Sat 6/12.  I’m hoping someone can tape it so I will have something to send to bookers.  It will be nice to have the State Theater as a credit.

I received my first piece of fan mail yesterday.  It was a nice feeling for sure.  At first I was pretty nervous about it though as Todd Chance (the host of the show) said they received a letter.  I immediately thought it was going to be hate mail or someone complaining (again the comedian in me thinking the worst is happening).  And lets face it, right now they can ask me not to come back pretty quickly.  I already went from being a M-F guy to a segment guy on just Tues and Thurs.  My segments can be a little more biting than the rest of the show which lends itself to complaints.  Instead a high school girl wrote about how my Talk Stu, about writer’s block, reminder her of a creative writing essay she had to do.  Her letter was nice and she enclosed her essay.  Not too shabby for a high schooler.  So I wrote her back thanking her for the kind words and asked her to keep listening.

Lachlan Patterson tonight with Jason Dixie.  I’ve worked with both before this weekend.  It will be a fun time.  Get on it folks.  Oh, and I will be there too.  I’m not too shabby either.

So I watched Last Comic Standing...

I hopped on Hulu and caught last night’s episode of Last Comic.  I gotta say I am not overly impressed with Hulu.  It kept cutting out on me because of buffering issues.  Annoying.  Not sure if that was them or my computer.  Meh.  Still nice that they had it for me to watch…

Seemingly the show hasn’t changed that much.  It still has an American Idol feel to it. Lunatics come out in costumes and spout whatever nonsense the voices in their heads, and support groups, tell them.  It provides with some laughs at their expense.  Sadly I feel it gives comedy a bad name.  But it makes for great tv!!!!  (You guys hear my soul die a little there?)

I’ve said it before but this show really boils down to editing.  They can make anyone look great and anyone else look like an ass.  I really had a hard time figuring out what the judges (PLEASE, someone tell me what Natasha Leggero is doing there?!  Just a human laugh track there…) were looking for.  Again, maybe this came down to weird editing.  At times I felt like they weren’t going to let a guy through then did.  I felt a lot of that had to do with previous relationships.  A few of these people got a pass because they’ve been doing this 20 years or whatever.  I spose I can’t blame the judges.

At times my roommate and I both wanted to punch the monitor at jokes being told.  Some were just horrid.  But because of animation and stage presence it carried over the judges.  My two favorite parts of the show were when Marc Ryan called Natasha “Nancy.”  Just priceless.  And I really liked Jonathan Thymius.  Great character.  Good stuff.  I hope he goes far.

The show encourages me to write more and in a different way.  At least it if giving me that.

Last Comic Standing...

Well, looks like the new season of Last Comic Standing is here.  It debuts tonight and not a moment too soon I say!  However I will miss it as I have no tv. Screw the cable company and once everything went digital I lost most of the stations I could get (NBC being one).  So I will see if I can catch it on Hulu or NBC.com at a later date.  My interest lies in it for a few reasons.  I’m interested in seeing Craig Robinson take over the hosting duties (I’ve been able to see him a few times) and the 3 new judges- Andy Kindler (have seen twice), Greg Giraldo (worked with once) and Natasha Leggero (I’ve seen her once and not really that impressed with it.  There are plenty of hot funny women out there if that is what they were going for.  Which it was.)  Last Comic Standing has done a world of good for comedy I believe.  I’ve been able to work with 3 winners of the show (John Heffron, Alonzo Bodden, and Jon Reep) and I know how it boosted all of their careers.  Just being on the show gives you some credibility.  However here is the rub…  The general public views this show like they do American Idol.  Its these people with little experience you just needed to be discovered.  This does not translate to comedy!!!  While someone might be able to sing someone else’s songs after only doing it in the shower or a church choir you can’t say the same about comedy.  I know open micers who have been doing comedy a few years and are still not that good at it.  You want seasoned people on that show.

I was asked by someone who has being doing comedy less than a year if they should have auditioned for the show.  My answer was obviously “YES!”  If they enjoy standing in a line for several hours with no pay off at the end.  I’ve heard about auditioning for the show before.  You need representation if you really want to be taken seriously.  You get a time slot so you don’t need to stand in line.  How does one get representation?  By working your ass off and hitting the stage… a lot!  Just because you have a solid 10 doesn’t mean you are ready for tv.  Is that 10 tv ready?  I think of a lot of headliners who I have worked with who didn’t make that show.  Literally a Whose Who of comedy…

But we need to remember this is also a reality show.  So (to me at least) it seems like people are picked because they are ethnic, fat, crazy, a hot woman, gay, etc…  Gotta fill the demographics.  This can create drama that sometimes bringing a funnier person might not have.  I suggest though that you work on your act and not pretend to be a hot, gay, crazy woman to try and get on the show.

While I won’t be able to watch it live I will be watching.  Let me know what you think and I will post my opinions after I watch it.  Enjoy…
